A Matched Pair of Ducal Scrolls

Completed with a whole team of people in time for July Coronation 2017, I only did the calligraphy on these gorgeous creations. I say “only” but the calligraphy was quite a challenge. This was the first time I’d ever worked with actual parchment and it proved an adventure. I learned just how temperamental it can be.

I knew ahead of time that the two scrolls would hang framed side-by-side which meant that the text needed to fit in the same space, match each other in general surface area and hand, and look very similar to each other. In other words, they needed to match. When one set of words is over 100 characters longer than the other you can imagine where the challenges began.

This project was done on animal parchment from a local, An Tirian producer, using multiple steel nibs.
